Practical Reasons to Put Custom Wheels on Your Truck
Most people tend to think about chrome wheels, mags, spinner rims and other aesthetic wheels when thinking about custom truck wheels. There are other custom wheels that have more practical uses however.
One of the most useful types of custom truck wheels is one that will convert a standard 8 lug mount to the hub center or metric wheels that are commonly found on commercial trucks. Ford, Chev and Dodge are all making heavy-duty pickups that can benefit from commercial wheels and tires, in comparison to the standard equipment they ship with.
There are several good reasons to consider commercial tires for your medium- or heavy-duty pickup:
- Longer tread life
- Smoother ride
- Better gas mileage
Conversion kits to convert standard pickup hubs to these wheels are becoming more and more widely used.
Another consideration for custom wheels is to improve the performance of your truck. The wheels that come stock on most trucks are made from steel, which is quite heavy. And if you add bigger tires to them the weight is significant. That added weight can affect both the performance of your truck and its gas mileage.
Switching to custom wheels made from lighter materials will not only reduce the weight, it will improve the gas mileage and in some cases even the ride quality.
There are also custom wheels that are made for specific applications, such as four wheeling. When you’re driving off-road you need a strong set of wheels. Since a lot of 4×4 have larger tires as well, you might need to change your wheels to accommodate them.
But in spite of all the practical applications, custom wheels are probably most commonly used to improve or change the look of your vehicle. Spinning rims, chrome rims and other aftermarket equipment can give your truck a whole new personality.
Whatever your reason for looking at custom wheels, you’ll find lots of options that you can choose from.
